Conversion tracking: how to know which ads bring real enquiries

Clicks and impressions do not pay the bills. Conversion tracking shows which campaigns bring enquiries, so you can scale what works.

Before increasing an ad budget, every business should be able to answer one question: which campaigns bring real enquiries? Conversion tracking is how you answer it. Without it, decisions are based on clicks and guesswork.

What counts as a conversion?

A conversion is any valuable action a visitor takes. For most service businesses that means a submitted enquiry form, a phone call, a WhatsApp message or a booking. For online stores it is a purchase. Decide on your main conversion first, then any secondary ones such as newsletter sign-ups.

Step 1: Define and name your conversions

List each action, where it happens on your website and what it is worth to the business. Use clear names, such as "Enquiry form submitted" or "WhatsApp click", so reports stay readable as campaigns grow.

Step 2: Install the tags

Google Analytics 4, the Google Ads conversion tag and the Meta Pixel each need to be installed on your website, ideally through one consistent setup such as Google Tag Manager. Respect visitor consent: where your privacy policy requires it, tags should only measure after a visitor accepts.

Step 3: Track the important actions

Forms are best tracked on a thank-you page or a confirmed submission event, not on a button click that might fail. Track taps on phone numbers and WhatsApp buttons as separate events. For calls from ads, Google Ads offers call tracking options.

Step 4: Test everything

Submit a test enquiry, tap the phone and WhatsApp buttons, and confirm each action appears in Google Analytics, Google Ads and Meta Events Manager. Testing takes minutes and prevents months of misleading data.

Meta Pixel and Conversions API

Browser tracking can miss some actions because of ad blockers and privacy settings. Meta's Conversions API sends events from your server as well, which can make reporting more complete. It needs careful setup so events are not counted twice.

Common tracking mistakes

Counting page views as conversions. Tracking a button click instead of a successful submission. Installing the same tag twice, which doubles results. Forgetting to test after a website update. And measuring different things in each platform so the numbers never agree.

Step 5: Use the data to decide

Compare campaigns on cost per enquiry rather than cost per click. Pause what does not convert, move budget towards what does, and improve landing pages where visitors drop off.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need Google Tag Manager?

It is not required, but it makes it easier to manage Google Analytics, Google Ads and Meta tags in one place without editing website code each time.

Why do Google Ads, Meta and Analytics show different numbers?

Each platform counts and attributes conversions differently. Use one source as your main reference and look at trends rather than expecting exact matches.

Is conversion tracking allowed under privacy laws?

It can be, when it is disclosed in your privacy policy and, where required, runs only after the visitor gives consent. Check the rules for your markets with a qualified adviser.
